Panther Families, Here we go again! LeRoy CUSD #2 will not be in session on Wednesday, February 12th. It is difficult to make a decision not to send kids to school a day ahead of time based on the forecast, and a forecast that likely doesn’t affect us getting to school in the morning. That being said, I know it helps families plan when they know what to expect as early as possible. We could wait until 5:00-6:00am tomorrow morning to make this decision, but I don’t believe we will know any additional information at that time that would change the forecast during the afternoon. While there are always uncertainties with weather predictions, the latest National Weather Service update is confident that we will see at least 3-4” of snow beginning around 8:00-9:00am with the heaviest precipitation 11:00am-4:00pm. They also predict snow turning to a wintry mix with freezing rain from 3:00pm on. In addition, it will be extremely cold with wind gusts throughout the day of 20-25mph. This all adds up to a mess for afternoon dismissal with difficulty keeping our lots clear and getting our students and staff home safely. Consideration was given to attending for a morning half day, but we would likely have done a planned early dismissal as early as 11:00am. That would not create any greater convenience for our families and would still include safety risks for our students and staff. In addition, over the course of the past week or more, we have seen illness absence spikes as high as 20% in our buildings. Between the weather concerns and the positives of getting kids away from each other for an extra day of rest, the decision to plan an emergency day made the most sense. Wednesday is our second emergency day of the school year. Both of those days will need to be made up at the end of our original school calendar. Any emergency days from here on out will be Remote Learning Days. Teachers have shared those plans with students, and everyone should be prepared for a Remote Learning Day if needed. Remote Learning Days do not have to be made up. Stay safe and warm. We’re one day closer to spring. Thank you for your continued support of LeRoy Schools! Go Panthers! Jeff Baughman Superintendent

Internship
LeRoy Schools will finish the regular school day. After school activities need to be completed by 5:00pm. We will run after school Panther Care until 5:00, but we ask that parents please pick up their children as early as possible. These decisions help allow our staff to get home safely.

We will keep a close eye on the forecast through the morning. We are under a winter weather advisory with the most likely window for freezing rain beginning at noon. Right now models show the greatest chance for freezing rain most likely late afternoon or early evening. However it could start as early as 1:00. Please have a plan in place for a potential early dismissal.

LeRoy 2018 graduate Jimmy Spencer was awarded the "Early Service Educator" award at the Illinois Music Educator Conference in Peoria today. He has taught at Olympia High School since 2022. Nominated by Dr. Andy Rummel from Illinois State University, he had this to say about Jimmy. "The transformation at all levels of the band program is nothing short of amazing since Jimmy's arrival at Olympia. Musically, the band are now focused on playing with their best characteristic sounds and have pride in what they are accomplishing. Mr. Spencer has single handedly doubled the members of the band in just three years." Pictured here: Dr. Andy Rummell, Mrs. Wells, Jimmy, Laura and Sean Spencer. Congratulations Jimmy!

🚨 🚨3:15 Update - Elementary school is back up and running. We will be in regular session on Friday. Additional details will be sent this evening. Plan on bringing water to school tomorrow but we will also have plenty of bottled water. 🚨 🚨

🚨 🚨 12:30pm Update🚨 🚨 1. Classes are operating normally at the elementary school. We will have normal dismissal. 2. There is no After School Panther Care. If you have concerns with pick up, please call the elementary office. 3. We have a water line break on our property that does not affect neighboring residents. 4. We are problem-solving having restroom access available until the end of the day. 5. Students have access to bottled water. 6. We made lunch adjustments and all students have eaten. 7. We are currently evaluating the impact on Friday. Right now we are planning to be in session and are doing everything we can to be in session. If we are unable to be in session Friday, it would be a Remote Learning Day for the entire district that would not need to be made up. 8. We will make a decision regarding Friday as soon as possible. That likely will not occur until 4:00pm at the earliest, but we will make a decision by 6:00pm.

Due to the ongoing water situation at the Elementary school, after-school Panther Care is cancelled today. All parents of Panther Care students must contact the office to arrange alternate dismissal plans prior to 2:30 PM. Thank you for your understanding!

🚨 🚨 11:15am We are still in the process of evaluating a water leak coming out of our elementary building into our back parking lot and are working with the city to determine the cause. Our water main has been shut off so there is not water to the elementary building. We have a solution for students to get bottled water as needed and for bathroom use. Otherwise we are operating as normal. We will update you when we have more information.
